Airbnb's waterfront filter is broad, and plenty of homes that use it are a road and a car park away from the water. We searched it on every continent and kept only whole homes that sit right on a lake, river or coast, with the water in the photos. These are the ten we would book first, from a cliff-edge cabin on King Island to a houseboat in a sailing bay outside Buenos Aires.

    A bright little floating home in a bay full of sailing boats, reached by a free boat that runs every half hour. Downstairs there is a reading corner, a double bed and a kitchen with an island; upstairs a covered deck with loungers and a hot tub. It is the cheapest home on this list.

    A detached 1940s-style family home on a private four-hectare estate near Saint-Malo, full of books, fireplaces and vintage furniture. Hydrangeas fill the garden, and the hosts can arrange Cancale oysters and a private chef. It suits a long stay: there is a proper office with very fast fibre.

Before you book

Before you book, ask the host how you actually reach the water: is there a dock, a beach or a path, and how steep is it? Also ask whether swimming is safe in the season you are travelling, because a lake or sea that is perfect in summer can be cold or rough in March.

How we chose: we searched every continent for waterfront Airbnbs, kept only whole homes rated 4.85 or higher whose photos show the waterfront, and picked the ten we would most like to stay in, at a range of prices. Nobody paid to be on this list.
