A pond changes a stay: herons at breakfast, frogs at night, still water to sit beside with a coffee. Airbnb has no pond filter in its menu, so we searched its hidden one and kept only whole homes where the pond is there in the photos. These are the ten we would book first, from a thatched cottage on its own lake in Normandy to a rammed-earth villa ringed by ponds in Bali.

    A white thatched cottage set on the shore of a two-hectare private lake, about an hour and a half from Paris. Inside there are two bedrooms, a fireplace, a library and big windows over the water. A small sauna sits on one of two wooden docks, and a rowing boat is there for drifting about.

    A three-bedroom villa finished in 2023, its walls rammed by hand from local earth, with green roofs and shaded porches that keep it cool without air conditioning. The rooms are warm wood and stone, and breakfast is included. Outside there is a long lap pool and a semi-tropical garden full of water.

    The pond: Three connected ponds wind through the garden around the villa, and the whole house reflects in them at dusk.

Inside is a king bed, a wood fireplace and a window seat that looks straight out at the paddocks. A sunken outdoor bath, made from an old cattle trough, sits beside the fire pit.

    The pond: A natural swimming pond under the willows has a small jetty, deck chairs and a fire bowl, and guests paddle across it in kayaks.

Before you book, ask the host whether you can swim in the pond or only look at it, and whether there is a boat or canoe to use. Ask too whether the pond is yours alone or shared with other cabins on the land.

How we chose: we searched every continent for Airbnbs with a pond, kept only whole homes rated 4.85 or higher whose photos show the pond, and picked the ten we would most like to stay in, at a range of prices. Nobody paid to be on this list.
