We searched the hidden one on every continent and looked at the photos of every home. These are the ten we would book first, from a cliff-top house on Crete to a bamboo villa in the Balinese jungle.

Before you book, ask the host whether the table is shaded or in full sun at lunchtime, and whether there is lighting for eating outside after dark. If you are travelling outside summer, it is also worth asking how windy the spot gets.
How we chose: we searched every continent for Airbnbs with an outdoor dining area, kept only whole homes rated 4.85 or higher whose photos show the outdoor dining area, and picked the ten we would most like to stay in, at a range of prices. Nobody paid to be on this list.
